Postal Transformation Through Drone Technology

Zimpost is accelerating the modernisation of Zimbabwe’s postal and courier sector through technological innovation, expanded digital connectivity and inclusive service delivery, following the commemorations of World Post Day 2026 held at Bambadzi Growth Point in Bulilima District, Matabeleland South, under the theme “One Postal Network, Infinite Possibilities.”

As part of the commemorations, the Postmaster General delivered the World Post Day keynote address, highlighting the importance of transforming postal services to meet the changing needs of communities, businesses and the national economy. A major milestone was the launch of Zimpost’s drone delivery system, which introduces new possibilities for parcel delivery, particularly in hard-to-reach and underserved communities. The initiative reflects the organisation’s commitment to embracing emerging technologies to improve operational efficiency, extend its reach and enhance customer experience.

The commemorations also saw the commissioning of the Maitengwe Border Post base station through the Universal Service Fund, in line with the national objective of expanding connectivity in border communities. The presence of NetOne and Econet at the border post is expected to strengthen access to telecommunications services and support improved digital inclusion. In addition, 100 computers were handed over to 10 schools, alongside Starlink connectivity kits, to support digital learning and help bridge the digital divide. The event also recognised three schools that excelled in the national letter-writing competition, underscoring the continued importance of writing, literacy and the postal service in education.

Guided by Vision 2030, the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2), the National ICT Policy, Smart Zimbabwe 2030 and the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, Zimpost is positioning itself as a modern, technology-driven postal operator. The organisation is working towards developing smart post offices, expanding digital services, exploring practical applications of artificial intelligence and strengthening partnerships that enable citizens and businesses to access reliable and affordable postal and courier services.

As part of the broader sector transformation agenda, the Postmaster General has directed the Permanent Secretary, working with the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) and Zimpost, to develop a costed Postal and Courier Sector Transformation Implementation Plan. The plan is expected to outline clear responsibilities, funding arrangements, implementation milestones towards 2030 and quarterly reporting mechanisms to track progress.

Zimpost remains committed to safeguarding universal postal service, strengthening its Digital Centres as gateways to essential services, supporting micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), promoting fair competition and public trust, improving financial sustainability, investing in its workforce and translating the National AI Strategy into practical initiatives. Through these efforts, the organisation seeks to ensure that the benefits of postal innovation and digital transformation reach every Zimbabwean, regardless of location.
